#OTD in history, 24 March 1603, Elizabeth I died at Richmond Palace in London, age 69. Succeeding her half-sister Mary I, Elizabeth’s reign lasted 45 years and was remembered as a Golden Age for England. Her death ended the Tudor dynasty and ushered in the reign of James I, England’s first Stuart monarch.

Recently restored portrait of Anne of Cleves by Hans Holbein the Younger (1539), currently housed at the Richelieu Wing of the Musée du Louvre. The results are striking—a powerful reminder of the rich colours of the age.

Anne became Francis’ mistress after his return from captivity in 1526, replacing Françoise de Foix in the King’s affections. She was banished from the court after Francis’ death and spent her later years clashing with those who resented her political influence.

📷 Rare, unreleased portrait of Edward VI (1537-53) and his mother, Jane Seymour, currently housed in the Butler Collection. The portrait has not been completely digitized and there is no other information available about it. Wishing everyone a lovely belated Mother’s Day!

These may look like ordinary tiles, but they tell the dramatic story of a clandestine mediaeval romance. Discovered during excavations at Grafton Regis Hermitage Priory in 1965, these 15th century tiles are decorated with the white rose of the House of York and the Woodville coat-of-arms. The combined emblems were likely laid to commemorate the marriage of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville on 1 May 1464. Their location may even indicate that the couple’s secret marriage took place in the Hermitage Chapel, close to Elizabeth’s birthplace.
